Skateboarding: A Potential Family Activity?

In our present society, it can be difficult to pry your children away from the television or computer long enough to give them a hug, let alone spend quality time with them. In truth, it can be just as difficult for adults to put these pastimes aside in exchange for activities that really bring the entire family together in activities that bond everyone together. Many group activities are just too expensive and time consuming to be enjoyed on a regular basis, which can be discouraging to parents that really want to engage their children in quality family time. While it might not be the first idea that pops into every parent’s mind, skateboarding is actually fun, affordable and healthy activity that can be enjoyed by the entire family.

Get Outside

One of the best ways to get your family out of a rut is to step outside of your familiar home setting, into the fresh air of your community. Not only does this provide a “third place” setting in which to get to know each member of the family, it also provides a great opportunity for you to get to know your neighbors.  So tighten those volcom belts and get out there!

Compete

If your children initially balk at the idea of skateboarding with the old folks, consider presenting it to them in the form of a competition. Encourage them to enter one of the regional skateboarding competitions taking place throughout the year and offer to train with them. If you take the focus off pressuring your kids for “quality time” and instead give your family a goal of winning a skateboarding competition, you may be surprised at their eagerness to participate.

Most skate competitions take place on the weekends, which means that you will not even have to sacrifice a workday to attend. However, if you get good enough to enter a national competition or if your family gets enthusiastic about skate culture in general, you can plan trips all over the world to enjoy skate competitions and exhibitions year round.

Skateboards and the accompanying equipment are affordable, even when buying gear for the whole family. Skating promotes regular exercise, provides bonding opportunities and creates an atmosphere of adventure and fun that the whole family can enjoy. In an age where quality time is hard to come by with your kids, skateboarding can serve as a means of keeping the family engaged in one another’s daily lives.
